League of Women Voters (LWV) of Marion will hold their annual Candidates Night (CN) Debate Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at the Marion Senior Center, 2375 Harding Highway E. This year’s participants are the contested local candidates running for office.
Community guests should arrive for seating between 7:00 and 7:20 p.m. The broadcast and videotaped debate will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Candidates will answer questions and participate in a debate-type forum broadcast live by WMRN, with Anthony Conchel, Managing Editor of the Marion Star, serving as moderator. LWVM President Beth Babich will introduce the Candidates Night program.
For audience members who wish to submit a question to one of the candidates, League members will furnish index cards onto which the questions, one per card, may be written. League members will collect and sort the questions and submit as many of them to the moderator as is possible for the time allowed. WMRN radio listeners may also submit questions by calling 740-387-6100. League members will monitor the timed responses and rebuttals.
Candidates Night will be videotaped by Harding High School’s Digital Communications Department under the guidance of telecom teacher John Mullins. Time Warner Cable will air the CN video on Channel 18 the weekend before the Tuesday, November 3 Election Day.
Contested candidates are as follows: Marion City Mayor – Christopher Culp, Jean Hoffman, Scott Schertzer; Marion City Auditor – Kelly Carr, Donald Smith: Marion City Law Director – Ray Grogan, Mark Russell; Marion City Council President – David Edwards, Scott Gray; City Council 1 – Ralph Cumston, Jill Lippert; City Council 3 – Tanner Hale, Michael Tomas; City Council 5 – Leslie Cunningham, John Smth; City Council At Large – Scott Crider, Josh Daniels, Rebbeca Gustin, Edward Layne, Kevin Norris; Marion Township Trustee – Larry Ballinger, Lynnie Birdsong, Tim Combs, Robert Stump.
Copies of the newly published LWV Marion fall election Voter Guide (VG), co-sponsored by the Marion Star, will be available at the Candidate Night event. The VG contains contested candidates’ biographical information and responses to questions. Also included are LWV Ohio’s Explanations of and the Pros and Cons for Issues 1,2, and 3 that voters will have on their ballot to vote upon.
