Motivated by the mischievous spirit of Halloween, Marion Lecture Recital Music Club (MLRMC) will present an assortment of musical ¡Rogues and Rascals! Sunday, October 18, 3:00 p.m., Central Christian Church, 421 Mt. Vernon Ave. The program is open to the public free of charge, with donations gratefully accepted for the club’s college and music camp scholarships that are annually awarded to local students. Performers and audience should feel free to add to the program’s atmosphere by dressing in costume or partial costume.
Musicians providing “spirited” performances include the following: Jim Besch – a medley of seasonal piano music to greet guests as they arrive for the program; Bill Becker – Kurt Weill’s Down in the Valley from his opera by the same name; Dorothy Blackburn – Mel Leven’s Cruella deVal from Disney’s One Hundred and One Damaltians; Eric McFadden – W.A. Mozart’s La Vendetta from The Marriage of Figaro; Marianne Allen – Stephen Swartz’s No Good Deed from Wicked; Ryan Swartz – Lionel Bart’s My Name from Oliver.
Other performances include Jo Ann Zimmerman – Englebert Humperdinck’s Witch’s Song and Dance, Now Hop, Hop, Hop from the opera Hansel and Gretel; Gabe Vaflor – Charles Gounod’s Mephisto’s Serenade from Faust; Carol Becker – This Place Is Mine from Maurey Yeston’s Phantom; Ryan Swartz – Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Lonely Room from Oklahoma; Kelly Culler – F. Wildhorn & L. Bricusse’s Good and Evil from Jekyll & Hyde; Bill Becker – Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado’s Song from Mikado; Kevin Orth and Julia Vanderhoff – Stephen Sondheim’s The Little Priest from Sweeney Todd.
The final selection will feature Gabe Vaflor singing as Scarpia in Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca, along with a singers ensemble, Jim Besch on piano, and Carol Wahl on organ for a Te Deum Laudamus hymn.
Pianists for the singers include Jim Besch, Joann Roszman, and Kathy Walczak.
The Marion Lecture Recital Music Club, an affiliate of both the Ohio and the National Federation of Music Clubs, is in its 95th year. Started in 1920, it has the distinction as one of the oldest and most active music clubs in the state. Its members are dedicated to the preservation and enrichment of music in the community and the schools. The club’s monthly programs, open and free to the community September to May, feature member and guest artist performances.
