Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine on Friday certified petition language for a proposed constitutional amendment that would increase the minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2021.
DeWine does not judge the merit of proposed amendments — only whether the summary that will appear on petitions accurately describes the proposed ballot issue.
The measure now goes to the Ohio Ballot Board, which will decide whether the proposed amendment is one or multiple issues, before supporters can begin collecting the 305,591 signatures necessary to put the issue before voters in 2016.
The Ohio Fair Wage Amendment would increase the minimum wage to $10 an hour on Jan. 1, 2017 and 50 cents per hour each year after until it reaches $12 an hour in 2021. After 2021, the minimum wage would be adjusted for inflation under current Ohio law.
The amendment would require employers to pay tipped employees $6 per hour in 2017 and increase wages by $1 per hour each year until it equals the full minimum wage.
