New depression support group meeting in Marion

National Alliance on Mental IllnessThe National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Marion and Crawford Counties has launched a free support group for individuals struggling with depression.

NAMI SHARE, which stands for Sharing Hope and Receiving Encouragement, is held on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Crawford-Marion ADAMH Board, 142 South Prospect Street in Marion.

The program is led by support group facilitators who have been trained through NAMI Ohio and who have experienced depression in their own lives.

Through the use of various resource materials, the program will provide relevant background information on depressive disorders, offer tools for tracking moods, stress the importance of building a strong support system, and suggest tips for developing a lifestyle that enhances wellness.  This includes the benefits of counseling, building self-esteem and self-confidence, developing new ways of thinking, coping with stress, relaxation techniques, diet, exercise, the importance of light, and preventing suicide.

Participants have opportunities to share their personal concerns, struggles, coping strategies, and triumphs in a confidential setting, while gaining encouragement, understanding, and insight from other group members.

The SHARE group embraces NAMI’s 12 Principles of Support, the last, and perhaps most important, of which is, “We will never give up hope.”

Registration for NAMI SHARE is not required, but interested individuals may call (740) 375-0796 for additional information.

NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI of Marion and Crawford Counties and its dedicated volunteer members and leaders work to raise awareness and provide essential education, advocacy, and support group programs for people in our community living with mental illness and their loved ones.
