Marion City Schools seek new board member following resignation

Rocky WhiteThe Marion City Schools Board of Education is seeking applicants to fill a vacant seat on the board.

Board member Rocky White (pictured) has resigned from the board, saying his business travel schedule and a new business venture make it impractical to continue to serve.

White has served on the school board since 2006. He was elected to his latest term in 2015.

“It has been an extremely rewarding experience and I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve our district over the last 10 years,” he said. “I’m very proud and honored to have had the ability to work with such a caring, professional and dedicated staff.

“While it is with regret that I leave the board, the decision is made easier with the complete confidence I have in Superintendent (Gary) Barber and his leadership team to continue to move our district forward,” said White. “I look forward to continuing to support the board, Mr. Barber and the entire staff of the Marion City Schools in our goal of inspiring a community of achievement.”

White’s resignation leaves a vacancy on the board for the remainder of his four-year term.

Applications from residents who live within the school district will be accepted until 4 p.m. April 18. To apply, people interested in serving must submit a resume and letter of interest to the school board. They can be emailed to Marion City Schools Treasurer Veronica Reinhart at vreinhart@mcspresidents.org or sent by mail to Marion City Schools, C/O Veronica Reinhart, 420 Presidential Drive, Suite B, Marion, Ohio 43302.

Whether sent by email or regular mail, letters of interest must be received by 4 p.m. April 18

White’s term expires in 2019. Under state law, the person appointed will have to run for election for the remaining two years of the term in the 2017 general election.

School board members set educational goals and establish policy for the school system basing their decisions on state laws and community values. They employ the superintendent and treasurer and hold them responsible for managing the schools effectively.

According to the Ohio School Boards Association, duties include:

  • Hiring and evaluating the superintendent and treasurer;
  • Setting district policy;
  • Establishing budgets;
  • Engaging parents;
  • Being good fiscal stewards.
