Ohio House approves online voter registration

Ohioans will be able to register to vote online next year under a bill passed Tuesday in the Ohio House.

Secretary of State Jon Husted, who has lobbied lawmakers to allow online voter registration since 2011, supports the bill and said online registration makes voting easier and more secure and saves money.

Senate Bill 63 passed the House in a 90-2 vote and now goes back to the Senate for final approval, as soon as Wednesday. If passed and signed by Gov. John Kasich, Ohio would join 31 other states and the District of Columbia in offering online registration.

Previous efforts to allow online voter registration have died or stalled in the House, where lawmakers had concerns about the security of the system. House legislators pushed back the implementation date to no earlier than January 2017.

The secretary of state’s website already allows voters to update their address or other registration information. Husted has said his office can switch the system on as soon as a bill is passed. He said Tuesday he was disappointed the system won’t be live for November’s presidential election.
