Deadline nears to file for Homestead Exemption

Marion County Auditor, Joan Kasotis, is reminding Marion County taxpayers that the deadline for applying for both real estate and manufactured home tax savings through the Homestead Exemption Program is Monday, June 6, 2016.

This program provides a tax relief to homeowners who are either 65 years of age and older or permanently disabled.  Applicants must own and occupy their home as their principal place of residence and have a total adjusted gross income of no more than $31,500.

This exemption, which takes the form of a credit on property tax bills, allows qualifying homeowners to exempt $25,000 of the market value of their home from all local property taxes. That means a home valued at $100,000 will be taxed as if it was value at $75,000.

Under the disabled Veteran-enhanced exemption, a disabled veteran who has a 100% service-connected disability is entitled to a homestead reduction in taxes equal to a $50,000 credit of the auditor’s market value of their home.  For example, through the Homestead Exemption, a home with a county auditor’s value of $100,000 would be billed as if it is valued at $50,000.

Total income includes the Ohio adjusted gross income of the owner and the owner’s spouse.  Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability are exempted from the total income means test, regardless of age. Disabled veterans must provide proof of VA disability and a copy of Form DD214 (veteran’s discharge characterization).

The potential savings range is from $264.00 to $441.00 annually, depending on the taxing district.  Local governments, including schools, are fully reimbursed from the State.

Applications are available by calling the Auditor’s Office at 740-223-4020 or can be downloaded from the Auditor’s website at
