Information meeting set for 2016 Popcorn Festival Pageants

The Marion Popcorn Festival will again be having a full slate of pageant opportunities for all age groups and, new this year, men.  If you are interested in taking part in any of the pageants, there will be an informational meeting for parents and participants at bluefusion located in the Plaza Shopping Center on Route 95 East on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.

New for 2016 are the Mr. Popcorn Pageants.  Set for Saturday, August 13, 2:00 p.m. at River Valley High School, the pageant will be divided into age groups:  0 – 5; 6 – 12; 13 – senior in high school; and adult.  There will be one winner for each age group, and contestants will be judged on formal wear and popcorn wear.  The deadline to enter is July 30.  For more information, contact Lori McGraw at 740.244.6710.

The Miss Little Wee Pop pageant is set to be held on Saturday, August 6, at River Valley High School and is for girls 0 to 23 months.  Set to begin at 9:30 a.m., Little Wee Pops compete in formalwear and popcorn/theme wear.  Deadline for registrations is July 23.  Parents who cannot make the meeting but have questions may call Jamie Williams, 740-244-1961.

The Miss Wee Pop pageant will also be held on Saturday, August 6, at River Valley High School.  Set for a noon start, the event is for girls aged 2 through 5 and they will compete in formalwear, costume with a popcorn or Festival theme, and swimwear with a popcorn or Festival theme.   The deadline for registrations is July 23.  Parents who cannot make the meeting but have questions about Wee Pop may call Rena Cranmer 740-262-3236.

Miss Teeny Pop will be chosen Saturday, August 13, at River Valley High School.  Competition begins at 9:30 a.m., and participants must be aged 6 – 12.  Each contestant will compete in formal wear, talent, and the commercial categories. The final deadline to enter is July 30.   Parents who cannot attend are encouraged to contact pageant coordinator Morgan Schwartz at 740-341-8266.

Miss Teen Popcorn, for contestants aged 13 to a senior in high school, will take place in the River Valley High School auditorium on Saturday, August 13, at 7:00 p.m.  Contestants will compete in formal wear, talent, popcorn wear, interview, and an on-stage question.  For more information, call Linda Candel at 740-225-3147.  The final deadline to enter is July 30.

Miss Marion Popcorn Festival is for contestants 17 – 24 who have graduated high school.  Ms. Marion Popcorn Festival, for contestants 25 and older, will be held in conjunction with the Miss Marion Popcorn Festival on Saturday, August 6, at 7:00 p.m. at River Valley High School.  The Miss contestants will compete in talent, formal wear, popcorn wear, interview, and an on-stage question.  Ms contestants compete in formal wear, popcorn wear, interview, and an on-stage question.  Deadline to enter these events is July 18.  Those wishing to learn more who cannot attend the meeting may contact Lynnell Jamison at 614-205-9349.

Entry forms with complete details for each pageant are available online at www.popcornfestival.com.  The cost is $85 to enter a pageant, except Mr. Popcorn and Miss Little Wee Pop which are $50.  There is also a separate photogenic contest with a $10 entry fee for the first entry, $15 for two entries, and $20 for three.  The results of the photogenic contests have no bearing on the results of the overall pageant.

All 2016 Marion Popcorn Festival pageant winners will receive prizes, be highlighted on the Festival’s main stage, take part in the Popcorn Parade, and represent the Marion Popcorn Festival at local and statewide events throughout the coming year.

The 2016 dates of the Marion Popcorn Festival are September 8, 9 and 10.   Main stage entertainment includes Thursday, September 8’s Bike Nite featuring Rock Brigade – The Def Leppard Experience at 8:30 p.m., country star Kellie Pickler on Friday, September 9, and heavy metal/rock band Skid Row set for Saturday, September 10.   All headline performances begin at 8:30 p.m. are free of charge to Festival attendees.

Other events include Terry Lee Goffee, The “Ultimate” Johnny Cash Tribute, at the historic Marion Palace Theatre at 2:00 p.m. on September 8, the Popcorn Parade with over 300 units, a popcorn cooking contest, a fine art show, crafts, Popcorn 5000 5K run/walk, Popcorn 100 bike tour, Community Showcase stage, Marion’s Hometown Talent stage, Poppin’ Party stage, and much more.
