A twenty member Ohio State Marion faculty and staff team, calling themselves OSU Marion Fitness “FAN”actics, were celebrated on Columbus campus recently for logging the most average daily minutes of physical activity as part of the university-wide Ohio State vs. Michigan Rivals Challenge.
The Rivals Challenge was a physical activity challenge initiated through the universities health and wellness initiative “Your Plan For Health” (YP4H). Teams of 2 to 20 were encouraged to accumulate minutes of moderate physical activity in order to beat that school up north. Rivals Challenge ran both on Ohio State and Michigan campuses, May 2 through June 26.
The team from Ohio State Marion was presented a check of $1,500 by Ohio State Chief Wellness Officer Bern Melnyk to be applied to the campus’s wellness program, in addition to Ohio State Marion being recognized on the championship trophy, which will remain on display in Columbus.
The Marion campus team consisted of the following faculty and staff members: Zuheir Alidib, Gordon Aubrecht, Beth Fohl-Bailey, Deana Bachtell, Leslie Beary, Emily Creasap, Sharon Gattshall, Leigh Gribble, Terry Gribble, Gary Iams, Barbara Kaelber, Gary Kuhn, Cherie King, John Maharry, Maryjo Mundey, Greg Rose, Dave Schul, Mary Ellen Tobin, Jeff Turner, and Pat Wood.
According to Ohio State Marion Wellness Innovator and team captain, Leigh Gribble, she and her team were amazed that Ohio State Marion took first place among 5,100 other Ohio State participants.
“I love the fact that they had such an exciting reveal celebration for the winning teams. We were honored to take first place,” said Gribble. “Although, Marion remained in first place throughout most of the challenge, it was still very exciting for all of us, because we didn’t know how it would turn out.”
The University of Michigan had over 6,000 individuals participate in the Rivals Challenge. Although the U of M had 900 more participants, their college counterparts in scarlet and grey logged more physical activity minutes in the challenge.
