Finally spilling one of the worst-kept secrets in Ohio politics, Attorney General Mike DeWine entered the Republican race for governor in 2018 on Sunday.
Speaking to dozens of supporters at his annual ice-cream social at his nearly 200-year-old country home, DeWine pledged action on a number of problems facing the state – including improving education and combating the opioid epidemic.
DeWine didn’t mention any concrete policy proposals to address those issues in his speech. Instead, he repeatedly returned to a theme of preparing Ohio for the future.
The attorney general also spoke of gaining motivation from the past. At one point, he became visibly emotional when he remembered his daughter Becky, who died in a car accident in 1993.
“My promise to you is that as governor of this state, I will not waste a day,” DeWine said. “I will remember that time is precious and finite, and when I walk into that governor’s office, I will be ready to go on day one.”
DeWine’s announcement was hardly a surprise – he’s talked about it for more than a year. The 70-year-old political veteran enters the gubernatorial race considered the likely frontrunner by a number of Republicans and Democrats, thanks in part to his strong name recognition as a former U.S. senator and congressman.
