Grace L. McMurray, age 90, died peacefully at her home, late Saturday night, June 26, 2010, in the care of her daughters.
She was born to the late Laura Adith Foos and Ray Edward Harvey on November 28, 1919 the oldest of seven children.
A graduate of Harding High School in 1936 at age 16 Grace worked for Attorney Paul Jones and the Marion Savings and Loan.
She married Harry ‘Mick’ McMurray September 15, 1942 and followed her husband to Whidbey Island Puget Sound in Washington where he was stationed at Fort Warden. Grace was employed by the US Army and Navy as a Courts Marshal Stenographer and also secretary for the Guard House at Fort Casey.
After her husband was discharged the couple returned to Marion and purchased a farm outside of Prospect where they raised their five girls.
Mick passed away in 1961 and Grace took a secretarial position with the Marion County Childrens Home. She was then recruited by Pleasant School to serve as treasurer to the School Board and district then retired 27 years later.
Grace was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church for 64 years and served as a secretary to the church board for 50 years. She also was the Sunday School treasurer and taught Childrens Missionary classes along with assisting children’s Sunday School music and nursery.
She was a member of Pleasant CCL for 55 years and helped raise funds to support the first Kindergarten at Pleasant School. She was a secretary/treasurer to the Senior Citizens for 4 years.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by daughters Edith Kathleen and Colleen Ann, sisters Ruth and Alice and a brother Marion Harvey.
She is Survived by her Daughters Sheila (Bill) Freeman, Molly McMurray and Norah (Larry) Fink; grandchildren Shannon, Patrick, Shane, Michele, McKinzie, Harrison, Reilly Ann; six great grandchildren; her sister Anna Mae; and her brothers James and Ray Edwin Harvey.
Grace was known to possess an artistic and poetic nature, quick wit and a passion for a good read. She enjoyed rural living and the ‘Love of the Land’.
Friends may call on the family on Thursday, July 1, 2010 from 4-6 p.m. at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 East Center Street, Marion. Services will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Prospect United Methodist Church, Prospect, Ohio. Burial will follow at Prospect Cemetery.
