Alma Gladys McDaniel Schnaufer, 98, of Marion

Alma Gladys McDaniel Schnaufer, age 98, of Marion, died Wednesday afternoon, September 22, 2010, at the Kingston Residence of Marion.

Alma was born May 29, 1912, in a log cabin in Union County, Ohio, near Richwood, to the late Marion L. and Irma McDaniel. She grew up in Marion, Ohio, on Pearl Street.

Alma graduated from Marion Harding High School, attended Dennison College and attended and graduated from The Ohio State University.

In 1934, Alma married Albert H. Schnaufer of Marietta, Ohio.  They lived for 8 years in the oil fields of Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas, and then returned and lived in Marion the remainder of her life.  She was a treasured housewife, mother, daughter, sister, and member of the Marion community.

Alma gave birth to three handsome sons, Pete Albert Austin (1938), William Daniel (1940), and George Lewis (1946).  George lost his life in a fire in Marion in 1961.  William and his wife, Lee, live in Columbus, Ohio and Pete and his wife, Marilyn, live in Orange, California.

Alma had six grandchildren:  Lynn Schnaufer, Jeff (Martha) Schnaufer, Mark (Fay) Schnaufer, David (Kathryn) Schnaufer, and Amy Schnaufer, all living, and one deceased grandchild, Samual Schnaufer.  She also is survived by three great grandchildren: Solana Mejia-Schnaufer, San Fernando, California, and Emily Schnaufer, Columbus, Ohio, and Christina Schnaufer, Greece.

Alma lived her life for her family.  She also enjoyed making and being with friends, traveling, golf, bridge, entertaining, and supporting community organizations.  She attended Epworth United Methodist Church in Marion for years and years.

Her husband Albert passed away in 1994 and Alma moved into Kingston Residence of Marion shortly thereafter and made many new friends there as well.  In 2003 she was stricken with Alzheimer's, remained in Kingston's Memory Care unit until her demise, and passed away quickly and gently in her apartment.  Her final seven years were generally comfortable and she continued giving love and inspiration to her family and friends, and to her fellow residents and staff at the center.

Alma is also survived by her sister Ann Hill, of Marion, and her brother John McDaniel, of Marion, and their many wonderful children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by another brother, Marion McDaniel Junior, also of Marion.

The family would like to thank all members of the community for their love and appreciation of Alma.

Alma’s family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion.  Private family services and burial will be held at a later date with Rev. Colleen Ogle officiating.
