Harriet Louise Waldo (Ouisie), 83 of Marion, OH and formerly of New Orleans LA died on Saturday, Sept. 18th at home.
She was born in New Orleans March 17, 1927 the daughter of Harry and Louise (Lapeyre) Waldo.
She graduated from Holy Name of Jesus School (HNJ) in 1944 and entered the Sisters of Mercy (RSM) convent. She taught school at Redemptorist Elementary, (HNJ), an RSM school in Greenville, MS, and an RSM school in Kenner, then back to HNJ.
She moved out of the convent to engage in various forms of community service including St Thomas Project, Hope House & Covenant House. She also regularly visited Orleans Parish Prison to assist the inmates both at the jail and once released, to re-establish a productive life.
Her constant companion was her white German Shepherd, Schultz. In about 1975, she re-entered into private life. She lived in the Irish Channel where she and Schultz were well known for their personal involvement with both people and animals.
She returned to teaching, at Green Elementary, then McMain Middle School where she retired from teaching. She greatly impacted many students’ lives and many contacted her over the years even finding her in OH. Matthew Heil remained especially close throughout her life.
After relocating to Ohio following hurricane Katrina in 2005, Ouisie continued her service to others by donating time to the Humane Society, and knitting countless blankets and scarves for the needy.
She remained "favorite aunt" to a number of nieces and nephews and a "much admired and appreciated" sister to all of her siblings. Her neighbors, family and anyone else she touched were always amazed at her unfailing generosity, wonderful sense of humor and, of course, constant pack of rescued and much-loved dogs.
