Mary Ellen (Mayers) Townsend, age 86, of Marion died unexpectedly Monday night, September 20, 2010 at her home.
She was born in Richland Township, Marion County, on December 5, 1923, the daughter of the late Harley and Sadie (Fetter) Mayers.
Mary Ellen graduated from Pleasant High school with the class of 1941 and later from Capital University in Bexley, Ohio.
She was married on July 21, 1946 to L. Daniel Townsend. The wedding was held at St. Paul’s (rural) Lutheran Church and was performed by Rev. Norman Schellhase. They shared 56 years of marriage until Dan passed away on March 12, 2003. She was also preceded in death by one son, David Alan Townsend, on September 21, 1993.
Survivors include one son, Paul “Keith” Townsend and daughter-in-law, Vicki (Blackford) Townsend of Westerville, Ohio. Also surviving: one brother, Charles D. Mayers and sister-in-law, Arlene Mayers, of Naples, Florida and Grove City, Ohio; one granddaughter, Elyce Marie (Chad) Cucksey of Columbus, Ohio; one grandson, Scott Eric Townsend of Westerville, Ohio; three great grandchildren, Anne Julia Cucksey, Samuel Paul Cucksey, and Joseph Ervin Cucksey of Worthington, Ohio.
Also survived by brother-in-law, Pastor Jack Townsend and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Townsend, Brenice Smith, Jeneane Jackson, Patricia Monroe and many nieces and nephews.
Mary Ellen was a lifelong resident of Marion County, where she held secretarial positions with Marion Power Shovel, Marion County Extension Service, and retired after nearly 20 years with Marion Production Credit Association.
Member of Emanuel Lutheran Church since 1951, Pleasant Senior Citizens, and Marion Senior Center where she was a member of the Mixed Chorus, “Seniors in Song”. She and her husband were former volunteers with Mobile Meals of Marion and Marion General Hospital; also former members of Western Round and Square Dance Clubs at Sunny Acres.
She took pride in her family and her home, loved music and sports, (especially Ohio State football and basketball and Cleveland Indians baseball) and spending time with her friends at Marion Senior Center in choir and card games.
Friends may call on the family on Thursday, September 23, 2010 from 4-7 PM at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 East Center Street, Marion. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 241 South Prospect, Marion with Pastor Mark Schuring officiating. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery.
