Shelby R. Smith, age 71 of Marengo died unexpectedly Monday, September 20, 2010 at St. Ann’s Hospital following an automobile accident near Sunbury.
He was born on September 23, 1938 in Knott County, Kentucky. Formerly of Columbus, he had been a Marengo resident for the past 39 years.
A retired finish carpenter by trade, he was a self employed master craftsman, specializing in custom stairways, furniture, and interior trim work. He took great pride in his work and was even prouder when it was recognized by others. His work motto was always “quality not quantity”.
An avid golfer, he enjoyed collecting and tinkering with different golf clubs. Always a fisherman, he especially enjoyed fishing the waters of Florida. He also had a passion for the banjo and playing Blue Grass music. He was always up for a cup of coffee, all day long.
Gentle, quiet, and even tempered he treasured his family, especially his grandchildren. He taught his family to be mindful of the work taken to earn each dollar before spending it.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years: Dean (Slone), daughter: Teresa Rinehart of Marengo, his “big and little babies” grandchildren: Matthew Rinehart (fiancée Desiree), Morgan (Angie) Rinehart, Great-grandchildren: Reece and Aubry.
He was preceded in death by his mother Gladys (Smith) Williams.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Saturday 1:00 p.m., burial will follow in Marengo Cemetery.
