Betty A. Linkous, age 91, of Marion and formerly of Centerburg, Ohio, died Monday afternoon, October 25, 2010, at Heartland of Marion following a valiant six year battle with cancer.
On February 22, 1919, Betty was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Reid and Blanche (Nuss) McMechen.
She graduated from Wheeling High School in the Class of 1936, and she received her bachelor’s of science degree in Education from the West Virginia University in the Class of 1940, where she also enjoyed playing on the tennis team.
While at her first teaching job in the small coal-mining town of Berwind, West Virginia, Betty met Graham Linkous. Shortly thereafter, they were married in December of 1942, just before he was sent away to serve in World War II. After his return, as a family they moved to Centerburg in 1953 to join his family that had already moved there. They shared over forty-six special years together. He preceded her in death in 1988.
For most of her career, Betty taught physical education and health class at the Centerburg High School.
A woman of faith, Betty was a member of the Crosswood United Methodist Church in Marion, and formerly was a member of the Centerburg and Mount Liberty United Methodist Churches.
An avid Ohio State University Buckeye fan, Betty enjoyed going to all of the home basketball games with her daughter and son-in-law for the last eight years.
Always fun loving and outgoing, Betty may be best known for her infectious laughter.
Betty will be dearly missed by her two children: Richard “Buck” (Karen) Linkous of South Carolina, and Jane (Fred) Fahrion of Marion; three grandchildren: Kristin (Mark) Beck, Greg (Jessica) Linkous, and Andy (Jennifer) Linkous; three great-grandchildren: Ridge and Janae Beck and Cara Linkous; and several nieces and nephews.
Including her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Charles McMechen.
Per Betty’s wishes, services will not be observed.
