Edwin W. Sankey, 89, Marion, died on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Heartland of Marion.
He was born on June 16, 1921 to the late Edwin and Margaret (Kaufmann) Sankey in Cleveland, Ohio.
Ed began his career at Ohio State prior to his WWII and Korean duty with the Marines attaining the rank of Captain. He graduated in 1947 from OSU in Mechanical Engineering. He has been a loyal buckeye fan since then and enjoyed time and travel with the Alumni Club friends.
He was awarded an OSU Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award and 11 patents during his career as a registered Professional Engineer. Ed formerly served on the board of the American Red Cross and was employed over 33 years at Marion Power Shovel retiring as Chief Engineer in 1985. Ed formerly attended Epworth United Methodist Church.
Ed is survived by his wife, Mildred L. (Popovich) Sankey, married on February 16, 1952; sons, Jeff (Cathy) Sankey of Dublin, Ohio, and Mike (Kim) Sankey of Galena, Ohio; grand daughter, Jennifer (Ryan) Mitchell; brother, Gale (Jean) Sankey of San Diego, CA; sister, Virginia (Henry) Hollencamp of Kettering, Ohio; nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Sankey; and a grandson, Brian Sankey.
Family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 4, 2010 in the funeral home with Rev. Colleen Ogle officiant. The burial will follow in Marion Cemetery with graveside services by the Marion County United Veterans Council.
