Pastor John W. Mayes, 83, of Marion, passed away Sunday evening, October 3, 2010, at Marion General Hospital.
He was born February 22, 1927 in Toccopolo, Mississippi to the late Cale Thomas and Luevonia Donaldson Mayes.
Pastor Mayes was the husband of Mattie Jewell (James) Mayes (District Missionary), who survives in Marion.
Elder Mayes was the oldest of his four siblings. His faithful service to God began when he was saved at the age of nine. He received his early education in the state of Missouri. He later moved to Marion, Ohio where he had been a resident for forty-five years.
Pastor Mayes was Pastor and founder of The Mayes Community Temple Out Reach Ministry Church of God in Christ. He had served the church and Marion community for 45 years, and his impact will last for many generations.
He was President of the Mayes Temple Student Scholarship Fund; was First Administrative Assistant of The Central Jurisdiction of Ohio, Evangelist Department; member of the state program committee; chairman of the Mansfield/Marion District; President of the Interdenominational Ministers Alliance of Marion; member of the Christmas in July Revival Committee; charter member of the First Church of God in Christ in Lorain, Ohio; and founder of the Marion Community Choir.
He also served on the adult city probation board; the Mayor's affirmative action board; and was a member of the NAACP, and Who Is Who.
In addition to his wife of 51 years, Pastor Mayes is survived by three aspiring children, sons, Johnnie D. (Lenora) Mayes, and Kristopher Mayes both of Marion, and daughter, Kristee Mayes of Marion; grandchildren, Tiahani Mayes, LaCosta Mayes, and Amaré Deshaun Mayes; three great grandchildren, Khamryn Mayes, Khaelyn Mayes, and Kolton Manuel; one brother, Ellis Mayes of Rochester, New York; one sister, Phyllis (Harold) Drayton of Mansfield, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews and special community sons and daughters.
On Friday, October 8, 2010 at Mayes Community Temple, 801 Bennett Street, calling hours will be held from 5-9 PM. During the calling hours, beginning at 7 PM, there will be a memorial service led by local clergy affiliated with Pastor Mayes. A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 9 at 1 PM at Dayspring Wesleyan Church, 2431 Marion-Mt. Gilead Road. Burial will be Monday, October 11 in Marion Cemetery with the committal service beginning at 10 AM.
