Paul H. Cass, age 91, of Mount Gilead, went to be with the Lord early Saturday morning, October 9, 2010, at the Woodside Village Care Center following an extended illness.
On May 13, 1919, Paul was born in Morrow County, the youngest of seven children to his Christian parents, Ward and Laura (Christman) Cass. He was raised on a 100- acre farm, where he learned about hard work, and to love and appreciate nature, while helping farm hand for his family.
Paul attended school at the Iberia High School, and graduated with the class of 1937.
Shortly thereafter, in March of 1941, Paul was drafted into the U. S. Army to help his fellow countrymen during World War II. He served for four years as a surgery technician and worked in the 16th General Hospital. For his efforts tending to wounded soldiers as they were brought off of the front line in battle, he earned several medals, including three bronze stars.
Upon his honorable discharge after the war, Paul settled down and raised a family, marrying Margaret Ann Veazey, with whom he lovingly raised four sons and one daughter.
A man of deep faith, Paul had been a member of the Pleasant Grove and Mount Gilead Church of Christ. In 1971, he started serving as a Lay Missionary, serving Montana, Alaska, and British Columbia.
A skilled craftsman, Paul worked for nearly forty years as a self employed carpenter who “could do anything from build a house from the ground up, to doing any repairs, and even masonry.” His work came simply from his reputation, until he retired in 1982.
Upon his retirement, Paul started building a modern Gospel Wagon, and in the summer of 1988, he started his trail with a team of horses going from Ohio to Trails End Ranch in Montana. His gospel wagon displayed his love for the Lord as he had his favorite Bible verses inscribed upon it, and on the back he carved “slow down and read your bible.” While at the Trails End Ranch, he again worked as a carpenter.
A true outdoorsman, Paul loved to spend nearly all of his time outdoors. Also, he would go hunting and fishing as often as he could.
A proud father, Paul and his family enjoyed a “wonderful family life”, despite many of his old time ways. He loved any time spent with his family and with his many good friends, and he loved the company of his dear canine friend, Skeeter.
Paul will be dearly missed by Ann Cass of Lexington; five children: David (Linda) Cass of Decatur, Tennessee, Randolph (Pheba) Cass of Galion, Donald (Kathy) Cass of Lexington, Robert (Janice) Cass of Galion, and Rebecca (John) Westbrook of Lexington; thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; and countless nieces and nephews.
Including his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his four brothers: Burton, Chester, Gill and David Cass; and two sisters: Nellie Flowers and Eudene Reed.
A graveside service, with military honors provided by the V.F.W. Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 11, 2010, at Iberia Cemetery with Rev. Claude Likens officiating.
