Carrie J. Severns, 92, went home to be with the Lord, on Friday, December 10, 2010. She passed away at Marion Manor, which had been her home for the past few years, with family members by her side.
She was born in Ball Ground, Georgia, on March 25, 1918 to the late Joel L. and Flora A. (Shipman) Buchanan.
At the age of 5, her family moved to South Amherst, Ohio where she eventually met and married her first husband, John "Hunse" Fahrney. They had one daughter, Lenore R. (Richard) Ruby of Marion.
Shortly after being widowed at the age of 22, she then moved to Marion where she met and married the late Robert E. Severns. They had one son, Wayne E. (Nancy) Severns, also of Marion.
The oldest child in her family, she had 3 siblings. Charles Buchanan, Ruth (Buchanan) Armstrong, and Harold Buchanan who have all preceded her in death.
Carrie was a wonderful mother and loved her family dearly. She took much joy in being a grandmother. She was blessed with 5 grandchildren and 1 step-grandchild. Pam (Roger) Smith of Marion, Rick (Connie) Ruby of Milan, Shari Roque of Marion, Greg (Gretchen) Severns of Marion, John (Amy) Severns of Marion, and Mike Malone of Indiana.
She was also blessed with 10 great grandchildren, 2 step-great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and 1 step great -great grandchild.
She took much pride in her country and for many years was very involved in the VFW Auxiliary 8199 in Anna Marie Island as was her late husband. Both of her brothers served their country with her youngest brother, Harold, being killed in the Korean War. Her husband, Bob, also served during WWII in the Navy and she currently has a great grandson who has followed in his footsteps and is serving in the Navy on the U.S.S. Nimitz.
Carrie and her late husband spent many hours giving back to those who had served their country and took much joy in bringing some peace and comfort to others.
She was a member of the Y-menettes for many years prior to retiring to Florida in the late 1970's. She returned to Marion in the mid 1990's along with her husband due to his health problems to be around friends and family during their latter years.
Carrie loved life and loved being around people. She was young at heart and in spirit up to the very last breath she took. Anyone that knew her would remember her as being very classy and a hard act to follow. She had a heart of gold and would have done anything for her family. She will be sadly missed by all, but has left a wonderful legacy of what it means to be a family. Those who were closest to her can tell you that it was not all the grand moments that they will remember, but all the small everyday things that will live on in us forever.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Michael Hayes and his staff and to Marion Manor who treated her like family.
Calling hours will be from 11 am – 1 pm, Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors with the service to follow at 1 pm. Pastor Charles Reed will officiate. Burial will take place at Marion Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Hospice of Marion, or a Veterans donation of the donors choice. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.gunderhallandfolk.com
