Donald Ray Greenwood died at his home on December 15, 2010 after a long illness.
He was born on May 13, 1917 to the late Jessie H. and Nellie (Typsword) Greenwood. He was a life long resident of the LaRue area and was a 1936 graduate of LaRue High School.
He and Virginia Roux were married on December 23, 1939 and she survives. He is also survived by his son, Harold Douglas Greenwood, his daughter-in-law Judi and grandsons Thomas Isaac and Andrew Scott. His son Dr. Don Scott Greenwood preceded him in death on September 30, 1978.
Donald joined the Navy in 1942 and served aboard the USS Hilary P. Jones in both the Atlantic and Pacific arenas of World War II. His destroyer was one of the escorts of the battleship that hosted the signing of the peace treaty to end the war with Japan. Following his naval duties he returned to Ohio and worked as a machinist at the Erie and then as an automobile mechanic with Midtown Chevrolet, Short Ford, Kennedy Ford and retired in 1979 from Mathews Kennedy Ford. For him retirement was merely a change in occupations as he became an active participant in his son’s woodworking business for the next 20 years.
He was a past member of the LaRue Lions Club and served as its president at one time. He was a 65 year member of the Phillippi-Clement Post 101 of the American Legion of LaRue.
Donald was the last member of his family of six brothers-Earl, Elmer, Orville, Harry, Carey and Delbert and his three sisters, Lillian, Marie, and Irene. However, he is survived by sisters-in-law, Martha E. Lust of Marion and June Appelfeller of Florida as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
The Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home of LaRue, have assisted the family in final arrangements for Mr. Greenwood. Calling hours will not be observed. Interment will be in the family plot at the LaRue Cemetery. Rev. Tim Pasma will officiate at the interment. His family will host a private memorial service at a later date to honor his unwavering devotion to them and his long productive life.
