He served in the army and was a veteran of the Korean War.
On May 6, 1955 he and the late Dolly L. Rider were married by the reverend Fredrick Haley at the Methodist Church in Essex, Ohio. Not only did he marry Dolly, but he became the best daddy that any two children could ever hope for, raising them as his own.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolly; his parents, Emmette and Clarice; a son, Lonnie Keith "Porky" Rider; two brothers, Robert and Junior Wurtsbaugh; a sister, June Henderson; and a great-granddaughter, Brittany Elizabeth Golden.
Don was a terrific family man. He was the best grandpa ever. He was there for anyone who needed a helping hand. He was the fix-it man. He enjoyed cookouts and camping with his family; not just once in a while, but every weekend. For no more than he made, he sure helped people like he had plenty. Don retired from Empire Builders as a general contractor. He was essential to the building of Grandview Estates and other homes in Marion and surrounding counties. He also built the home he lived in with his family.
