Lula “Granny” Hess, 89, of Centerburg

Lula “Granny” Hess, age 89 of Centerburg went home to be with her Lord Friday, December 17, 2010 at St. Ann’s Hospital.

She was born in Perry County, Kentucky on August 20, 1921 to the late  Jasper and Armilda (Branson) Young.

Lula married Carvet A. Hess and together they began a family until his untimely death in 1964. Through her faith and strength, trials and tribulations Lula raised her family on her own.

Considered a prayer warrior, she was a founding and 50 year member of the Centerburg Enterprise Baptist Church. A member of the former Tri County Craft Club, she enjoyed crafts of all types.  She was a wonderful cook of “hillbilly food”.  Her cornbread, fried potatoes, green beans, and famous pinch and dab pie will long be remembered.

The true matriarch of her family, she was Granny to everyone.  Loving and caring, she could be sassy at times.  She termed herself “a tough old bird”.  She treasured the yearly family reunions in Ohio and Kentucky.  She treasured her close and extended family as they were also her friends.

Granny was  preceded in death by her parents, husband Carvet in 1964, daughter Kaye Hess in 1999, son-in-law: Michael Sheldon in 2006, as well as several 3 brothers and 5 sisters.
She is survived by her daughter: Brenda Sheldon of Centerburg, Grandchildren: Randy (Stephanie) Bosworth and their children: Michael, Kayla, and Olivia, Rhonda (Neil) Watson and their children: Whitney, Jordan, Emily who is also a grandchild, and Morgan, Steve Sheldon, and Emily Hess.

Friends may call Monday 5-8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Tuesday 11:00 a.m. with her Pastor Mark Tuggle officiating, burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery.
