James L. “Jim” Lehner, age 67, of Iberia, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, January 18, 2011 at his home.
He was born on September 9, 1943 in Galion, the son of the late Clifford Lehner and Marie (Staley) Long.
Jim attended Chesterville High School and later graduated from Mount Gilead High School. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving two tours during Vietnam as a Navy Seal. He was very proud of the Silver Star and 2 Bronze Stars he received.
He worked many different jobs after his honorable discharge from the Navy. Most notably as the boiler operator on a steam ship, the chief engineer at the power plant, a truck driver, and mechanic. His role as a mechanic fit him well, because as his family said, he could fix anything.
In 2000 he was reunited with his school mate and high school sweetheart, Charlotte James. Their friendship began as 12 year olds and after Jim’s enlistment in the service; they lost touch, found spouses, and raised their own families. In 2003 their reunion was complete when they were married on June 26th in Crawford County.
Jim enjoyed farming and gardening and was particularly fond of growing tomatoes. As a younger man he would participate in tractor pulls.
Most importantly were times spent with his family, especially his many grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his three children, James (Lynn) Lehner Jr. of Tiro, John (Annette) Lehner of Lexington, and Jamie (Mike)Jakel of Wisconsin; six step children Shane (Cyndie) Campbell of Iberia, Shelley Campbell of Columbus, Shauna (John) White of Marion; Sheldon (Allison) Campbell, Shannon Campbell of Columbus, and Shad Campbell of Columbus; 17 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and two brothers Jerry Long of Marengo and Mike Lehner of Florida.
Friends may call on the family on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 from 10:00 AM to noon at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 South Main Street, Mount Gilead, Ohio 43338. Graveside services will follow at Iberia Cemetery with the AmVets Post #87 and VFW Post #8054 participating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be sent to the funeral home to assist with funeral expenses.
