Rev. George R. Sprague, 81, of Marion

Rev. George R. Sprague, age 81, of Marion went to be with the Lord Tues., Feb. 15.

He was born June 23, 1929, in New York City and grew up in Vineland, N. J.

He graduated with a business degree from Juniata College in Pennsylvania and obtained his Master’s Degree in gerontology from Goddard College in Vermont.

His professional career included retail management in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Captain in the Salvation Army; Director for the Crawford County Council of Aging and Director for the Kansas and Ohio Green Thumb Program.

After retirement, he followed his passion in photography where he photographed weddings, sport events and special occasions. He was also a member of the Masons and later the Lion’s Club in Marion. Another love was playing his trombone in the Abelphi and New Washington community bands.

Charity work was important which included work in Love In the Name of Christ (Love, Inc.), Life Is From God Ministries, Marion Citizens For Life and Operation Christmas Child. (A shoebox ministry) He helped coordinate the annual Life Chain and was an active member of the Grace Brethren Church. Hobbies included camping and gardening.

Rev. Sprague is survived by five children: Bruce (Cory) Sprague of Cary, N.C., Barbara (Mike) Roberts of Norwalk, Ohio, James (Carina) Sprague of Riverside, Calif., Linda (Bill) Shepard of Cardington, Ohio, and Paul Sprague, of New Bloomington, Ohio. He had ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His sister, Mary E. Sprague, resides in Vineland, N.J.

Preceding him in death is his wife, Irene M. Sprague, and his parents, Edgar and Carol Sprague. Edgar Sprague Jr., his brother, died while serving his country during World War II.

Friends may call Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Hughes-Allen Funeral Home. A celebration of George’s life will be held Friday morning at 11 a.m. at Grace Brethren Church with Pastor John Jones officiating.

Memorial contributions may be given to Grace Brethren Church, Marion, Ohio, or Marion Citizens for Life.
