Richard L. “Dick” Loyer, age 83, of Marion and formerly of Waldo, died Monday morning, January 31, 2011, at Grant Medical Center following complications from a fall he experienced last Thursday.
On July 20, 1927, Dick was born in Marion County, one of five children of the late Norris and Florence (Fairchild) Loyer. When he was only ten years old, he lost his mother to tuberculosis, and was placed in the Morrow County Children’s Home. He was then taken in and raised by Wallace and Mabel Rengert in Waldo.
During his last year of school in Waldo High School in June of 1945, Dick and some of his classmates left school to go and enlist to join his fellow countrymen in the battle of World War II. He joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard an aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Shangri La.
Upon his honorable discharge, Dick returned to Waldo to finish school. Shortly after graduating, he began working as a carpenter, first building homes and quickly moving into working on commercial buildings. Using his vast building experience, Dick was promoted to being a superintendent and he had worked on jobs for many companies throughout Marion and all of Ohio.
On October 17, 1969, Dick married the love of his life, Twila (Beers) Loyer, and together they shared over 40 wonderful years of marriage.
A man of faith, Dick was a lifelong member of the Peace Community United Church of Christ. He was also a member of the Marion Masonic Lodge Post #70, V.F.W. Post 7201, Marion Senior Center, Marion’s YMCA, and the American Legion Post 605 in Waldo, which he and Art Lutz were instrumental in its founding.
Always willing to lend a helping hand, Dick often lent his services a handy man to his many friends in Waldo whenever he was needed.
With a passion for woodworking, Dick not only enjoyed working as a carpenter building homes and commercial buildings, he also enjoyed making gadgets and crafts.
An outgoing and fun loving man, Dick may be best known for his love of telling jokes. No matter the circumstance, Dick always had a joke up his sleeve which he was ready to tell in a moments notice.
Dick will be dearly missed by his wife, Twila Loyer of Marion; four step children: Sharon Utley, Sue (Jody) Graber, Michael (Debbie) Shenefield, all of Marion, and Teri (Jim) Phillips of Niceville, Florida; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Osmun of Kansas; numerous nieces and nephews; and two step grandchildren: Jody (Tim) Adkins and Lana (Travis) Bishop.
Including his parents and the Rengert’s, Dick was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Loyer; two sisters: Grace Radel, and Mary Belle Erenst; and by a sister-in-law, Dolly Osmun.
The Loyer family will greet friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2011, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Peace Community United Church of Christ, 4061 Columbus-Sandusky Rd. S. (SR 98), Waldo, with Rev. Joel Fetter officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council will follow in Waldo Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Peace Community United Church of Christ.
