Virginia Mae “Ginny” Gay, age 84, of New Bloomington, passed away peacefully and content on Saturday evening, May 28, 2011, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.
On March 13, 1927, Ginny was born in Marion, the oldest of six children of the late Carl and Auta Lucille (Roush) Flinchbaugh. She graduated from Marion Harding High School in the class of 1946.
On numerous occasions while she was growing up, the roof of a barn on the family farm needed fixing, and a young gentleman, Donald Gay, and his father would stop out to fix it, and Ginny caught his eye. And “after being very persistent,” he eventually convinced Ginny to go on a date with him and the rest would be history. Then, just a few days following her graduation, Ginny and Don were married on June 23, 1946, at the Epworth United Methodist Church. Together “they shared a happy life and seven children” whom they adored, and he preceded her in death on May 29, 1986.
An extremely hard worker, Ginny worked two and three jobs for most over forty years to help provide for her family. She had worked at “Lawson’s, Hill’s, Ames and the Whirlpool cafeteria doing whatever jobs needed to be done.”
A woman of faith, Ginny was a member of the Richland Road Church of Christ. Also, in her younger days, she was a member of the Eastern Star, Rebecca Lodge, in New Bloomington.
A favorite pastime for Ginny was most definitely “sitting and crocheting anything she could think of to make.” She would say, “I just put colors together and see what I can make out of it.” Also, for the Delaware County Children’s Service she made well over 200 pairs of hats and gloves in hopes to keep a little one warm.
With a love for the outdoors, Ginny especially enjoyed sunshine, often sitting in the sun for hours upon hours. She also enjoyed doing her own yard work and watching her hummingbirds.
One thing was for sure, Ginny “could sit and watch ball games all day long,” making her kids take care of all of the chores she was putting off.
Ready to go in a moment’s notice, Ginny was the “first one to get in the car” to travel any where. She also loved spending the weekend in her van at the tractor pulls.
Ginny will be dearly missed by her six children: Roger (Beverly) Gay of Proctorville, Ohio, Nancy (Donald) Foster of Brownwood, Texas, Peggy Bond (Al Weikel), Kathy Puthoff, both of Marion, Judy Oberly of Delaware, and David Gay (Brenda Jones) of Marion; 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Ralph (Pat) Flinchbaugh; one sister, Guyla Bollinger; two sisters-in-law: Kathy Flinchbaugh, all three of Marion, and Betty Tron of New Bloomington; a brother-in-law, Raymond “Sonny” Gay of Marion; and countless more loving family.
Including her husband and parents, Ginny was preceded in death by her son, Donald “Spike” Gay Jr.; three brothers: Paul, Richard, and Carroll Flinchbaugh; and a son-in-law, William Puthoff.
The Gay family will greet friends from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at the Richland Rd. Church of Christ, 535 Richland Rd., Marion. Services honoring her life will follow immediately at 3:00 p.m. with Russell Howard officiating. Burial will follow in LaRue Cemetery.
The Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home is honored to have been chosen by Ginny to serve her family.
Rather than flowers, her family requests memorial contributions may be made to the Richland Rd. Church of Christ or to Marion General Hospice, and they may be sent to the care of the funeral home.
