Gladys Thelma Mayer, 96, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2011, and Robert W. “Bob” Mayer, 92, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2009. They were both of Leesburg, Florida, and formerly were of Galion, Ohio.
On February 19, 1915, Gladys was born in Morrow County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Clayton and Almeda Fisher. She graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1933. Gladys worked as a secretary at North Electric in Galion, Ohio, was a Methodist and member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
On December 5, 1916, Bob was born in Marion, Ohio, the son of the late Charles and Florence Mayer. Bob worked at various companies in Marengo and Galion, and then lastly at Perfection Waste Receptacle Manufacturing Company in Galion as their shipping and receiving manager until his retirement in 1980. To help serve his beloved country, Bob took leave from Perfection to enlist in the U.S. Army and serve during World War II. He also was a Christian Scientist and a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 414 F &A.M. of Galion.
Gladys and Bob were married at the brides’ farm home in Morrow County, on June 23, 1935, and the brides’ uncle, Rev. Bert Lee performed the ceremony. Together they resided in Galion for 50 years before moving to Leesburg, Florida, and had shared over 73 wonderful years of marriage.
The couple will be missed by their three children: Robert W. (Dorine) Mayer, Jr., Painesville, Ohio, Patricia Louise (Ted) Storer, Manhattan, Ill., and Barbara Anne (Bill) Brooke, Hix¬son, Tenn.; nine grand¬children and twenty great-grandchildren; and by Gladys’ four sisters and brother: Martha McPeak, Evelyn Young, Joan McCarty, Earnestine Bland, and Leroy Fisher, all of Morrow County.
A celebration of Gladys and Bob’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 5, 2011, at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mount Gilead.
