Harold J. Gillis, age 72 of Marengo passed away at home Sunday, September 18, 2011.
He was born on July 11, 1939 in Dearborn, Michigan to the late Roy and Helen Gillis, he was raised in the area of Melvindale.
A proud US Navy veteran, he served on the LS-10 class USS Wexford County as a landing craft operator. After 26 years with Anheuser Busch he retired in 1999. Working third shift in the grains dryer operations, he had perfect attendance throughout his career.
A stout Navy man, he was a member of American Legion Post 710 and the US L.S.T. Association. An old car enthusiast, he was skilled in automobile restoration. Always straight and true, he was a man of integrity and sincere honesty. Harold treasured time spent undertaking projects on his farmstead, which he called his back 40, as well as rides in the countryside and spending time at his cabin in upper Michigan.
He is survived by his sons: John and Dale Gillis both of Marengo, sister Charlotte Hyatt of Taylor, Michigan, companion and care giver Connie Gray.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 33 years: Carolyn and brothers Roy and James Gillis.
Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury , where services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will follow in Marengo Cemetery.
