Mary Alice Hoopes Sawyer, age 74, of Mount Gilead, passed away at Woodside Village Care Center in Mount Gilead, OH on Friday, September 16, 2011.
She was born in Columbus, OH on September 22, 1936, the daughter of the late Orlin Charles and Visa Lorraina (Folk) King.
Mary was a fun loving, devoted mother and grandmother. She had the most wonderful sense of humor, and loved to laugh. She spent her free time playing cards, video games, and she loved to travel.
Mary attended Goshen High School in Beliot, OH. Mary married her high school sweetheart, Rip, in Salem, OH, and raised four children. She relocated to Mount Gilead, OH, where she worked as the manager of the deli and bakery at Geyer’s Supermarket from 1975 – 94. Mary worked with her daughter Sandy, in the family business, Sandy and Steve's Used Tires until 1999, when she retired and moved to Palm Coast, FL.
Mary is survived by her four children: Nancy E. (Steven Robinson) Hoopes of Mt Gilead, OH, Sandra K. Hoopes of Pickerington, OH, Donna J. Embree of Sierra Madre, CA, Richard L Hoopes of Palm Coast, FL; six grandchildren and two great granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore (Buzz) Sawyer; her 1st husband, Richard (Rip) W. Hoopes; three brothers: George William, Dale, and Jack; and two sisters, Lola and Doris.
Mary will be dearly missed by friends and family. A memorial service at Highland Memorial Park in Beloit, OH is planned at a later date.
