Luella J. English, 98, of Marion

Luella J. English, age 98, of Marion, Ohio died Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Marion Manor where she had resided for the past twelve years.

Luella was born December 18, 1912 to William and Martha Bartlett in Colorado Springs, CO.

Luella graduated from nurses training in Carbondale, IL and had additional training at Baylor University Hospital in Dallas, TX before being accepted into the American Red Cross Nursing Service in July 1942.

She served in the US Army Nurse Corps from September 10, 1942 until February 19, 1946 during WWII in the Mediterranean Theater, primarily Italy, France and Africa, where she attained the rank of First Lieutenant.

Luella Bartlett married Henry English November 24, 1945 in Raton, New Mexico and made their home in Canon City, Colorado. They had two children.  She worked at a registered nurse in Canon City.

She moved to Marion, Ohio in 1973 after her first grandchild was born and worked at Marion Manor until she retired from nursing.

Luella’s name was included on the Women In Military Service For America Memorial that was dedicated in Washington, DC on October 18, 1997.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Bob and Merle Bartlett, husband Henry English April 16, 1964 in Canon City, CO, daughter Ruth Anna English March 2, 1971 in Canon City and son Ronald Henry English May 20, 2004 in Marion, OH.

Luella loved her family and is survived by daughter-in-law Betty English of Marion, OH, grandchildren Erik English of Delaware, OH, Matthew English of Lexington, KY and Amber (Mike) Oller of Delaware, OH and four great-grandchildren: Alexus Holmes, Lauren, Evelyn and Henry English, her sister-in-law Faye Bartlett of Bellingham, WA and several nieces and nephews.

A woman of faith, Luella was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Luella’s family will greet friends from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion, where services honoring her life will begin at 7:00 p.m., with Rev. Daniel Kiger officiating.  Burial with military honors will take place at a later date at the Marion Cemetery.
