NCC Floyd M. Jones II, USN-Retired, of Rockport, TX, died Saturday evening, November 19th, 2011 after a 4-1/2 year battle with lung cancer.
Floyd was born November 1, 1942, in Montgomery, WV, to Nada Florene Cavendish and Floyd Milton Jones, Sr.
The family moved to Ohio in 1956, and Floyd graduated from Marion Harding High School in 1960.
Floyd joined the Navy immediately upon graduation and served aboard the USS Sheldrake AGS-19, USS Cadmus AR-14, MONOB I, USS Maury, AGS-16; USS Independence, CV-62, and the USS Davis, DD-937. He also served in several shore duty capacities, including two tours of recruiting duty in Marion and Bucyrus, Ohio. Floyd got out of the Navy for a short period in the early 1970's and worked at Erie Lackawanna RR (Diesel Shop) in Marion, although he returned to the Navy and retired in 1982.
Following his Navy career, Chief Jones was never far from the ships. He worked for a time at VSE Corp. in Philadelphia, PA, and then worked for the DOD in Logistics Management at Naval Ships Systems Engineering Support (NAVSSES). In 1998, he received the opportunity to become the Philadelphia representative for NAVSSES at the Mine Warfare Center in Ingleside, TX, where he worked until his health forced his retirement in 2008.
On September 22, 1965, Floyd was married to the former Rita McGowan, who survives him in Rockport, Texas, and they recently celebrated their 46th anniversary.
Floyd is also survived by two sons, Floyd M. "Russ" Jones III (Yuki) of Philadelphia, PA; and Capt. Eric S. Jones (Stephanie Perry), USAF-Ret. of Oklahoma City, OK. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Paige Elana Jones, of Nampa, ID; Morgan Elise Jones of Baltimore, MD; Ryan Thomas Jones of Philadelphia, PA, Lauren Nicole Jones and Cameron Perry, of Oklahoma City, OK. Floyd is also survived by two sisters; Brenda (Stephen) McGowan of Casa Grande, AZ, and Julia Troiano (Dennis Watson) of Radnor, OH. A brother, Harold M. Jones, survives somewhere in Alabama. Floyd is also survived by nieces, Teresa (Greg) Berg and Ellen (Howard) Sears of Shelton, WA, Stephanie Campos of Casa Grande, AZ; Amy (Rob) Smotherman of Marion, OH; and nephews, Michael (Andrea) Troiano, Tony Troiano, and Tom Troiano of Marion, OH; Troy (Jennifer) McGowan of Mansfield, OH, David (Amy) McGowan of Marion, OH; John E. McGowan III of Melbourne, Florida, and Stephen C. (Nicole) McGowan of Watertown, New York.
The Jones family will greet friends from 5 -7 p.m. on Friday, November 25, 2011, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life will also be held there on Saturday at 10:00 a.m., with Pastor Tim Miller officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Marion Cemetery.
