Nancy E. Reid, 73, of Mount Gilead

Loving someone regardless of their qualities or actions, with no conditions or circumstances, that love is unconditional love.  The same brand of love that Nancy shared with whomever she came across.  To forgive and love, those were the virtues Nancy stood for.

At the age of 73, Nancy E. Reid, of Mount Gilead, went to be with her Lord and Savior, on Thursday evening, December 1, 2011, at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

On April 3, 1938, Nancy was born in Mount Carmel, IL, the daughter of the late Clarence E. and June Lynette (Curtis) Woods.

She graduated from Edwards County High School in Albion, IL, in 1955 and furthered her education by receiving her three year nursing diploma from Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton, IL, in 1958.

She began her nursing career at Fairfield Memorial Hospital in Fairfield, IL.  In 1966, she took a position as a registered nurse at the Morrow County Hospital and excelled in her job there until her retirement in 1999.  Nancy was an “old school” nurse, taking on any task asked of her at the hospital.

While working as a nurse at Fairfield Memorial Hospital, a young orderly by the name of George Russell Reid caught Nancy’s eye.  They were united in marriage on December 9, 1962 and shared over 48 wonderful years in each other’s company.

A woman of deep faith, Nancy was a member of the Gilead Friends Church in Mount Gilead, where she and Russell were very dedicated and involved.

In her spare time, Nancy enjoyed sewing, doing cross stitching, and baking cookies for everyone to indulge in.  She was a lover of music, playing the piano often.  She was especially fond of big band, Christian, and Christmas music.

To Nancy, family was everything.  She loved her children dearly and her grandchildren were her pride and joy.  She was known as “BaBa” to them and was always there to take care of them when they were ill.  Nancy was always found in the stands cheering them on at their sporting, cheerleading and marching band events.  The Christmas holiday season was always Nancy’s favorite time of the year to be with her family and friends.  The joy she shared during this season exemplified the love she had for her Lord; the unconditional love she had for God, her family and her friends.

Nancy will be dearly missed by her husband, Russell, of Mount Gilead; three children: Jeffry Reid of Columbus, Michael (Jennifer) Reid of Mount Gilead, Susan (Jim) Sturdivant of Mount Gilead; seven grandchildren: Michael Reid II, Julia Reid, Matthew Reid, Joshua Reid, Judah Reid, Sarah Sturdivant and Rebekah Sturdivant, all of Mount Gilead; two brothers, Michael (Ronda) Woods of Orange Park, FL, Keith (Suzanne) Woods of Louisville, IL; one sister, Karen (Don) Sutherland of Bone Gap, IL; and her brother-in-law, Rodney (Connie) Reid of Fairfield, IL.

Nancy’s family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at the Gilead Friends Church, 3613 Gilead Township Rd. 115, Mount Gilead.  A service celebrating her life will also be held there on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Brian Mosher and Pastor Ron Ellyson officiating.  Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery in Mount Gilead.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made in Nancy’s honor to any of the following: Gilead Friends Church, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or to the American Diabetes Association.
