Lowell D. Mack, age 91, of Marion, went to be with the Lord on Monday evening, March 12, 2012, at Heartland of Marion following a several month illness.
On July 27, 1920, Lowell was born at home on the family farm, one of three children of the late William Thomas “W.T.” and Cora Louise (Click) Mack.
He attended Pleasant schools, but rather than finishing school he stayed home to help his father on the farm.
While riding the school bus, Lowell became acquainted with a young lady who would be his future wife, Hazel “Marie” Hoopman. On October 20, 1940, Lowell and Marie were married at their home place on rural route 6. Together they lovingly raised three children and over seventy one years of marriage.
A lifelong resident of the Richland and Barks road areas, where their family farm was, Lowell chose to dedicate his life to the farm at an early age. For over 40 years, he cared for their dairy and grain farms. He was proud to have been able to carry on the tradition of farming from his father, and also to share it with his son, Edwin. After selling the family farm in the early 1980’s, he continued farming his friend’s properties for several years until retiring.
Lowell had been a member of the Pleasant Adult Farmers Association, he was the last master of the Progressive Grange in Pleasant Township, and he was a member of the Pleasant Senior Citizens Center.
Snowbirds, Lowell and Marie spent nearly 6 months of every year at their home in Okeechobee, Florida, after his retirement. Most every day there you could find him on their patio, soaking up every ray of sunshine and all the warm air he could. He also fished as often as he could.
A man of faith, Lowell was a member of the Prospect St. United Methodist Church, where he looked forward to being a parking lot attendant every year during the Popcorn Festival.
Inheriting a love for fishing and hunting from his father, Marie “learned at an early age that if she wanted to go on a vacation, all she had to say to Lowell was ‘let’s go fishing’.” He loved going on fishing trips as a family to Minnesota. Lowell and Marie also enjoyed many other vacations to places such as Hawaii and Alaska.
Having a green thumb, later in life, Lowell and his sister, Ethel, enjoyed planting a “huge garden” together on their old home place.
An avid card player, Lowell enjoyed playing euchre and pinochle with his family and with his friends at the Pleasant Senior Citizens Center.
Best known for his “little Cheshire grin”, Lowell had an ornery streak and he couldn’t help but to kid and tease his family and friends mercilessly. He also was known to his family, as their “Sunshine”.
Lowell and Marie spent 10 years serving as foster parents in Marion County.
He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Marie Mack of Marion; two daughters: Marsha Mack of Marion, and Suzi (Bruce) Mack-Modlin of Omaha, NE; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Mack of Marion; two grandsons: Robert Carl (Mellie) Mack of Marion, and Edward Allen Mack of Groveport; four great-granddaughters: Ashley, Brittany, Cortney and Lindsey Mack; a great-great-granddaughter, Lyla Anne Luther; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Gast of Radnor; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including his parents, Lowell was preceded in death by his son, Edwin D. Mack in 1972; a sister, Ethel Fett March; and a brother, Leroy Mack.
The Mack family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2012, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life well lived will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Prospect St. United Methodist Church, 185 S. Prospect St., Marion, with Pastor Nancy Goulet officiating. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Prospect St. United Methodist Church or to the Pleasant Senior Citizens, and they may be sent to the care of the funeral home.
