Dwight Eugene Levings, 85, formerly of Marion

Dwight Eugene Levings, age 85, of Mount Gilead, died peacefully on Wednesday afternoon, May 16, 2012, surrounded by his loving family following a brief battle with cancer.

On October 1, 1926, Dwight was born as a set of twins in Radnor, Ohio, the youngest of six sons of the late Frank F. and Zoa F. (Gorenflo) Levings.  He graduated from Mount Gilead High School.

Soon after high school, Dwight married “the love of his life”, Marilyn Mae Roach, on September 24, 1945, in Greenup, Kentucky.  They shared forty wonderful years of marriage and lovingly raised two sons: Darrell and Kim.  Together they lived in the Cardington area until moving to Marion in 1964.  She preceded him in death in 1985, and finally after twenty seven years they have been reunited.

For over forty years, Dwight was dedicated to the H.P.M. Corporation in Mount Gilead, where he worked in many capacities and retired as their service parts sales coordinator in 1988.  Shortly after retiring, he moved to Mount Gilead to be nearer to his family in 1993.

A man of faith, Dwight enjoyed attending the Edison United Methodist Church with his family.  He was also a member of the Moose in Marion and Galion, and of the Lion’s Club in Marion.

To say Dwight was an avid golfer, would be an understatement.  Most every day for years and years you could find him out at the Pine Lakes Golf Course in Mount Gilead, playing his favorite pastime of golf, where he was “notorious” for too many things to mention.  He loved many other sports too, and enjoyed rooting on his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds.

For Dwight, “there was never a stranger in sight” and it didn’t take him long before he was talking to them and finding out their life history.  You could also find him at McDonald’s most every morning having his coffee and sausage biscuit with his friends, solving all of the world’s problems.  Even after he could no longer go there, his friends would bring him his coffee and sausage biscuit.

Quite the jokester, Dwight had countless funny phrases he would tease you with.  For example, people always asked him what he used to color his hair, and he say back to them with smile, “Preparation H”.  His fun loving and jovial personality too always made him a joy to be around…you just couldn’t help but to love Dwight!

A “family man first and foremost”, Dwight was so proud of his family and he was always there to support them in everything they did.  He very rarely missed a sporting event or activity for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  His daughters-in-law felt that he was the best father-in-law a girl could ask for.  He also shared a very special relationship with his wife’s family too, the Roach’s and the Russell’s.

He will be dearly missed by his two sons: Darrell (Rosemary) Levings of Mount Gilead, and Kim (Angie) Levings of Caledonia; two grandchildren: Angela Levings (Jeff)Widman of Marion, and Jeff Levings of Caledonia; six great-grandchildren: Jarrett, Jeffery, Aubrey, and Jamison Levings, and Natalie and Emma Rose Widman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Including his wife and parents, Dwight was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Wendy, who died at birth; and by five brothers: Othel, Marvin, Cecil, Floyd and his twin, Don Levings.

The Levings family will greet friends from 3 – 7 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2012, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead.  Services celebrating his life will also be held there on Saturday at 10:00 a.m., with Celebrant Don Lockwood officiating.  Burial will follow in Glendale Cemetery in Cardington.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Morrow County, 228 South St., Mount Gilead, Ohio 43338.
