George Marion Tanner Jr., age 92, of Marion, passed away at Marion Manor on Sunday, April 29, 2012.
He was born on March 22, 1920 in Charleston, West Virginia to Sylvia (Martin) and George Tanner Sr.
George married Clarabelle Mae (Saiter) February 16, 1980 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marion, OH. They just celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary this year. They had many fun years of class reunions, golf outings, bowling tournaments, fellowship at area lodges, and time spent with family and friends.
George was preceded in death by his first wife Velma (Kraner), daughter Wanda Jean Wells, and step-daughter Jo Ann (Lehner) Tucker, brothers Lester, Paul, and Homer Tanner.
George is survived by his wife Clarabelle (Saiter) Tanner; sons Alvin (Linda) Tanner of Santa Cruz, California, Gary Tanner of Marion, Lester Tanner of Columbus, Ohio, step-sons Donald (Cindi) and John (Glenna) Bentley of Marion, step-daughter Marie (JR) Redmond of Marion, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
George served in the United States Army in Europe in WWII, and was a former POW. His brother Lester was killed in WWII and received a Purple Heart for his valor. George also was a commissioner on the Board of Veterans Affairs for Marion County for over 10 years. George also served as Post Commander of #7201 and as Governor of Moose Lodge #889.
George owned and operated a family trucking company, Tanner Trucking, for over 40 years. He was an avid bowler for nearly 20 years, with a 189 average. He enjoyed traveling to various golf courses with his buddies each week to experience a variety of courses.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors from 4PM to 8PM with Parish Prayers at 4PM. A Funeral Service will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors with Rev. Bill Middleton officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Heights Memory Garden with Graveside Services conducted by Marion County United Veterans Council. Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors are handling arrangements.
