Joseph A. Candel, age 63, of Westerville, Ohio passed away peacefully on June 3, 2012. Joe was born in Bucyrus, Ohio on February 11, 1949. He graduated from Marion Catholic High School in 1967.
Joe had been a Franciscan Brother with Our Lady of Consolation Province for thirty-nine years. During that time he worked in Parish and Retreat Ministry in Kentucky, Missouri, and New Mexico. He was a missionary in Honduras for a short time. For ten years Joe was the Pilgrimage Director at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio. Joe studied theology at Bellarmine College in Louisville, St. Thomas College in Minneapolis, Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and in Canterbury, England with the Greyfriars.
Joe had a lifelong interest in flower gardening and had recently spent much time making rosaries and doing other beadwork. After leaving the Franciscans, Joe moved back to Bucyrus to be near his family.
Joe was preceded in death by his father and his mother, Cleo and Augustine; and his siblings, Jennifer Baker, Paul Candel and Pamela Candel. He is survived by his sister, Linda (Larry) Haas of Galena; his brothers Greg Candel of Waldo and Christopher (Linda) of Marion; and nieces and a nephew.
The Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 13th at St. Mary Church at 251 N. Main St. Marion, Ohio. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the Church before the mass beginning at 9:30.
