Thomas E. “Woody” Wood Sr., age 81, of Marion, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at the Marion General Hospital following an extended illness.
On May 3, 1931, Woody was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of the late Alvin and Mary (Watson) Wood.
Shortly following his graduation from high school, Woody enlisted to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He served his beloved country as a paratrooper from 1952 to 1959, and was stationed in Germany.
Upon his honorable discharge, Woody returned to Virginia and began working for the N & W Railroad Co., which later became Norfork & Southern Railroad Co. For work he moved to Chillecothe, and then later to Marion in the late 1960’s. He worked as a signal maintainer for over 34 years until his retirement in 1993.
A proud veteran, Woody was a lifetime member and past commander of the V.F.W. Post 3313, and was a member of the American Legion Post 584. For many years, Woody also served in the military honors detail with the Marion County United Veterans Council paying final tribute to his fellow veterans.
A jokester, Woody loved to tease people to have a good laugh. He also loved his buddy, his dog Jo Jo.
He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 30 years, Barbara (Brannan) Wood, whom he married on April 23, 1982; three children: Debra (Earl) Close of Marion, Tommy (Kristie) Wood of Caledonia, and Andy Wood of Indiana; 5 step-children; 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
