H. Lucille Landon Carroll, age 88, of Marion and formerly of Ashley, went to be with the Lord early Monday morning, July 9, 2012, at the Sterling House in Marion following an extended illness.
On January 3, 1924, Lucille was born in Delaware County, Ohio, the first of four daughters of the late Harry and Edna (Higgins) Carroll. She was raised in Ashley, where she graduated from Ashley High School in the Class of 1941.
Shortly following high school, Lucille married Merle Landon and they moved to Prospect, where they shared nearly 35 years together and lovingly raised their son, Mickey.
During her time in Prospect, Lucille worked as a secretary at the Prospect Elementary School. She also volunteered as an American Red Cross Swimming Instructor, teaching swimming lessons to youth, and was the first person in Marion County to accomplish their 50 mile swim.
Getting a second chance at love, Lucille married Edward Carroll on September 3, 1977, and together they moved to Boca Raton, Florida. While there, she was manager of the China Department at Burdine’s. After over ten years in Florida, she couldn’t stand being away from her grandchildren, and they moved back to her hometown of Ashley and built a log home on Strine Road. They shared over twenty wonderful years of marriage and many special trips, until he preceded her in death in October of 2001.
“A devoted Christian”, Lucille loved reading and studying the Bible, making notes all throughout on things that caught her attention. She also was an active member of the Ashley United Methodist Church, and several other churches where she had lived. She had also been an active member of the Eastern Star in both Prospect and Delaware, and was a Past Worthy Matron.
“A fantastic cook”, Lucille made sure her family regularly enjoyed their favorite meals and always had cookies ready for the children in her neighborhood. She especially enjoyed trying new recipes too, always noting what she thought of the recipe.
Very good with needle and thread, Lucille was able to make anything you could think of from afghans to teddy bears and clothing. Sewing, knitting and quilting were probably her favorite pastime.
Having a huge heart for children, Lucille always got herself involved in the lives of children everywhere she went. For most of her life, she taught Sunday School to help children better understand what it means to be a Christian. She also volunteered with cub scouts when her son was growing up, and volunteered to have River Valley students learn to read to her. She was “good to her grandchildren”, having a very special relationship with each of them.
She will be dearly missed by her son, Mickey (Linda) Landon of Marion; two grandchildren: Kevin (Nicolette) Landon and their children: Kaden and Adelyn; and Kyle (Robin) Landon and their son, Levi; two sisters: Betty Decker of Ashley and Gertrude Thatcher of Delaware; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her husband and parents, Lucille was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Jackson; and former husband Merle Landon.
Her family will greet friends from 10 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012, at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, 1510 W. William St. at Valleyside Dr., Delaware. Services honoring her life will also be held there at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Joe Sopher officiating. Burial will follow in Marlborough Cemetery in Delaware.
