Nathan M. Smith, age 18, of Marion, died tragically early on Saturday morning, September 1, 2012, at the Marion General Hospital from injuries sustained in a bicycling accident.
On October 7, 1993, Nathan was born in Jacksonville, Florida, the son of Wendy Mitchell of Marion and Larry Smith of Florida.
This past June, Nathan graduated from the Rushmore Academy here in Marion, and was in the process of putting applications out in search of a job. Formerly, he attended Elgin schools, where he enjoyed singing in their choir.
For most of his childhood, Nathan attended Sunday School at the Oakland United Methodist Church.
Always on the go, Nathan enjoyed bicycling and skateboarding with his friends. He also enjoyed adding new Chinese knives to his collection, a hobby he started many years ago.
Very free spirited, he was a friendly young man with a “happy go lucky” personality. He also was quite the “charmer”, having a sweet way of talking with women.
He will be missed by his mother, Wendy Mitchell of Marion; his grandparents: Carl (Janice) Mitchell of Marion, and Karen Mitchell of Florida; a great-grandmother, Mary Mitchell of Marion; two aunts: Kelly Curry of Florida, and Holly Turner of Dublin; several cousins and many dear friends.
Nathan’s family will greet friends from 4 – 8 p.m. on Friday, September 7, 2012, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring Nathan’s life will also be held there on Saturday at 10:00 a.m., with Pastor Rafael Velazco officiating. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in care of the Nathan M. Smith Scholarship Fund, to benefit the Rushmore Academy, and they may be sent to the care of the funeral home.
