Robert L. “Bob” Maddy, 84, of Mount Gilead

Robert L. “Bob” MaddyRobert L. “Bob” Maddy, age 84, of Mount Gilead, passed away Monday morning, October 22, 2012, at his home.

On July 25, 1928, Bob was born in Crestline, Ohio, the son of the late Hubert F. and Mabel M. (Hotelling) Maddy.

He graduated from Crestline High School in the Class of 1946 and had also attended Pasadena City College.

A World War II Veteran, Bob served in the United States Navy from 1946 – 1948.

On December 7, 1963, Bob married Marie Fry at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Crestline.  They shared over 48 wonderful years together as husband and wife.

A self-employed truck driver, Bob was an owner/operator for Bekins Van Lines out of Hillside, Illinois.  He drove a truck for 20+ years.

Bob was a member of the V.F.W. Post 2920 and American Legion Post 0488, both in Crestline, and also belonged to the Crawford County Coon Hunters.

Bob loved the outdoors and wildlife.  He enjoyed hunting deer, pheasant and rabbit.  When he woke up in the morning, he got out a deck of cards and played Solitaire until he won a game.  He also did crossword puzzles and had a coin collection.  He spent many hours sharing stories with anyone who would listen.  Weekends were spent cheering for his Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns.

Bob’s family meant the world to him.  In the summer he would take his daughters on road trips in his truck.  He would always bring them gifts when he returned from a trip.  He was a wonderful supporter of his family and loved each one of them dearly.

Bob will be missed by his wife, Marie Maddy of Mount Gilead; four daughters: Rhonda Prater of Hilliard, Brenda Maddy of Mount Gilead, Deena (Ken) Barcus of Safety Harbor, FL, Linda Maddy of Mount Gilead; five grandchildren: Kali Prater, Tara Prater, Darrian Maddy, Hailey Barcus, Griffin Barcus; two brothers: Donald (Ruth) Maddy of Wakkiacus WA, James (Barbara) Maddy of Crestline; nine sisters: Betty (Charles) Conn of Crestline, Marjorie Cook of Crestline, Doris White of Atascadero, CA, Virginia Nelson of Crestline, June (William) Paynter of Ooltewah, TN, Janet Maddy of Crestline, Marlene (Patrick) Volk of Galion, Patricia Maddy of Crestline,  and Mary Pursley of Crestline.

Bob’s family will greet friends from 4 – 7p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead.  Services celebrating his life will be held there at 11:00 am on Thursday with Pastor Ray Linn officiating.  Burial with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87 will follow in Shauck Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Odyssey Hospice, and may be made in care of the funeral home.
