Marjorie H. Watkins, 80, formerly of Marion

Marjorie H. Watkins, age 80 of Columbus and formerly of Marion, OH and Lilburn, GA, passed away at Kobacker House in Columbus on Monday, November 19, 2012 while surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on January 12, 1932 in Camden, New Jersey to the late Merwin and Sara (Black) Hummel. Always sports minded, she played basketball in her youth and later for a semi-pro softball team in Washington, D.C., where she earned the nick name “Slugger”.

Marjorie previously worked as an Occupational Therapist and Activity Director for Marion Manor.  While living in Marion, Margie was very involved in the Children’s Ministry at Epworth United Methodist Church, including serving as Director. In addition to her Epworth involvement, she had also attended the Lilburn Alliance Church in Lilburn, Georgia as well as the Vineyard Church in Columbus, Ohio.

She loved the outdoors and the call to nature even as a child. The family activities of camping, hiking, and canoeing were favorites. Always with a camera ready, she captured photographs of nature and flowers, just to have.  Marjorie also collected driftwood from every adventure as well as pine cones and bits of nature she used to create art treasures of her finds. She had a passion for the beauty of Estes Park in Colorado, enjoyed a dream trip to the frontiers of Alaska, but was happiest at Ocean City, New Jersey surrounded by her family.

Loving and kind, she possessed a sweet genuine personality. Marjorie also took delight in attending the activities of her grandchildren. She also enjoyed working in the yard, tending to her flower beds. A gifted cake decorator, she was especially known for her doll cakes with butter cream icing.

Marjorie expressed her love by feeding friends and family with her home cooked and baked dishes. She will long be remembered for her Sunday waffles, meatloaf, campfire donuts, and Swedish Christmas cookies that everyone would help decorate.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Mark (Stephanie) Watkins of Columbus and Nancy (David) Schwartz of Atlanta, GA, as well as her precious grandchildren; Daniel, Kalyssa, Amanda, Trace, Kira, and Kitano, sister Frances Kaminski of Apache Junction, AZ and a brother, Henry Hummel, of Tiffin, Ohio.
