Robert R. “Bob” Starcher, age 67, of Marion, has “gone home” to be with the Lord Saturday afternoon, November 10, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving family following a four month battle with cancer.
On January 26, 1945, Bob was born in Marion, one of six children of the late Harmon and Mary (Beck) Starcher. Even at a young age he put his family first, leaving school early to work to help support his family.
Proud to be a veteran, Bob enlisted to serve his beloved country with the U.S. Navy.
Upon his honorable discharge, Bob returned home to Marion, where he first became a welder for the Marion Power Shovel until they closed. Then, after working several other places, Bob found a home at Buckeye Ready Mix driving their cement truck for 12 years, until his retirement a year ago.
A man of deep faith, Bob was an active member of the Marion Enterprise Baptist Church, where he had served as an usher, bus driver and operated their sound system.
An avid fisherman, Bob loved fishing “anywhere he could throw in a line”, but he especially loved fishing up in Lake Erie. He shared his love of fishing with his family, whether they liked it or not. He also enjoyed planting his vegetable garden every year.
“A big cut up”…“a jokester”, whenever Bob was around you knew there would be lots of laughter.
Most important of all to Bob was his family, whom he loved spending all of his time with. He especially enjoyed the holidays, wanting everyone home because he believed “the more the merrier”!
Having a heart of gold, Bob would do anything he could for you…“even give you the shirt off his back”. And “he never knew a stranger”, and if you were a friend of Bob’s he treated you like you were family.
He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Stephanie Starcher; seven children: Phillip (Paula) Starcher, Robert Starcher, Denim (Jessica) Franklin, DJ Basinger, Chris Basinger, Denise Basinger, all of Marion, and Clyde Williamson of North Dakota; 27 grandchildren; a brother, Larry Starcher of Marion; a sister, Marguerite Richard of Mansfield; several brothers and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including his parents, Bob was preceded in death by two brothers: Eddie and Homer Starcher; and a sister, Roxie Taylor.
The Starcher family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services celebrating his life will also be held there on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Jim McIntire and Cory Carroll officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council will follow in Grand Prairie Cemetery.
