Ruth Ann Abel Gearhiser passed away on November 15, 2012, in Marion. A lifelong Marion resident, she was born on January 4, 1925, the daughter of Hazel Fetter Abel and Roy Abel, Sr.
Ruth Ann was a graduate of Harding High School, attended The Ohio State University and worked at Fulfillment Corporation of America before she married Obal H. Gearhiser, Jr. (deceased) in 1951.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, Junior Service Guild, served on the Marion Parks and Recreation Board, Ohio State University-Marion Advisory Council, was the first woman president of Marion Country Club and for 56 years, enjoyed the company of what members believe to be ‘the longest-standing ladies bridge club in Marion’. Ruth Ann was passionate about many things especially her love of her hometown, Marion.
Family members and friends remember her as a mother who volunteered, a golfer, an avid gardener, a lover of sporting events, and was an OSU and Cleveland Indians fan. They will also remember her conversational skills and that she enjoyed travel and summers at her home in Northern Michigan. Ruth Ann taught her children and grandchildren the art of card-playing and the respectable skill of being a polite and fair-minded sports fan.
Ruth Ann leaves behind a brother, Roy Abel (Lee), daughter Joan Grove and son Kurt (Deborah), as well as 4 grandchildren: TJ and Sydney Grove, Jack and Cate Gearhiser, and a great-grandson Brayden Grove. Her family will always be grateful for the wide and loving circle of friends who surrounded Ruth Ann throughout her life.
Services for Ruth will be held privately by her family.
