C. Jean Poole, age 87, of Mount Gilead, was welcomed into Heaven with open arms by Jesus and her beloved husband, early Wednesday morning, December 19, 2012, at her home surrounded by her dear friends and caretakers.
On March 30, 1925, Jean was born in Mount Gilead, the only child of Frank and Iris (Soladey) Corwin. She graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1943.
For 37 years, Jean worked as a sales clerk and assistant buyer for the Children’s Department of the Union Store in Mount Gilead, until her retirement in 1987.
Later in life, Jean found herself enjoying the company of a quiet gentleman, Roy Poole, who helped carry her groceries at Geyer’s Market and used the same laundromat. On December 24, 1970, Jean and Roy were married at the First Presbyterian Church, and they cherished their 37 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on June 13, 2008.
A devout Christian and woman of deep faith, Jean always was reading her Bible or had it within reach. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Gilead, where she had been a Sunday School Teacher. She was very proud of her church, which her family helped to found and she loved her church family. She also was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary #329.
Every year, Jean and Roy looked forward to their visit to Roy’s hometown of Galax, Virginia, and they also enjoyed going on many senior bus trips together.
Enjoying the companionship of a loyal canine, Jean always had a dog in her life and she loved to tell stories of every dog she ever had. They were like children to her and were her true passion, especially her dog, Santana. She also loved walking her dogs all over town.
Good in the kitchen, Jean enjoyed baking, especially cakes, and she enjoyed experimenting with new salad recipes. She also enjoyed sewing and needlepoint, and was formerly a member of the Knit-Knot Club.
Having a heart of gold, Jean’s first thought was always of others. She was always taking gifts to her friends, and was a great caregiver for Roy.
Being an only child and coming from a small family, Jean has only a few cousins who survive. She will be missed by her best friend’s daughter, Pat (Tom) Harden of Mount Gilead, who was like a niece to her, and her church family.
Friends are welcome to visit from 10 – 11 a.m. on Friday, December 21, 2012, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services honoring her life will follow there at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Dr. Thomas J. Mori officiating. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery in Mount Gilead.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in care of the First Presbyterian Church and Hospice of Morrow County, and they may be sent to the care of the funeral home.
