Catharine Emily Stout, 93, formerly of Marion

Catharine Emily Stout, 93, died peacefully Monday, January 14, 2013 in Bend, OR.

Kay, as she was known to her friends, was born in Shreveport, LA and grew up in Sandusky, Ohio. She moved to Marion OH in the early 1950’s with her husband Robert O. Stout, a Marion native and attorney.

At the urging of her son, Robert, she returned to school and earned a BA, MA, and PhD in Social Work from the Ohio State University. She went on to teach as an adjunct professor at OSU-Marion and maintained a counseling practice in Marion.

As active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Kay served as the Superintendent of the Sunday school for many years and was the first woman elder in her synod. In the 1970’s, she received the National Organization of Women (NOW) Woman of the Year Award for Central Ohio for her work in starting the first shelter for battered women in Marion, OH. Later in life, Kay moved to Oregon to be near her son, Rob and his family. She was a kind, loving and very proud grandmother to her two grandchildren, Carlos and Maya and a treasured mother-in-law to her son’s wife, Pat.

She is survived by her son, Rob Stout, daughter-in-law, Pat Stout, and two grandchildren, Carlos and Maya Stout of Bend, OR, nieces and nephews Mary Warytko of Cleveland, OH, Richard Warren of Huron, OH, Robin Stout Cook of Indianola, WA, and Randy Stout of Phoenix, AZ.  Her husband, Robert O. Stout and her parents Catherine and Emil Michaux predeceased her.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 18, 2013, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 East Center Street, Marion, from 5PM to 7PM; Funeral services will be held on Saturday at the funeral home at 10AM with Pastor Rob Howard officiating. Burial will be in the Marion Cemetery.
