Howard W. Taylor, age 78, of Edison, died peacefully and quickly Monday afternoon, January 28, 2013, at his residence following a nice day with his family. He had been courageously battling cancer for over nine years.
On June 3, 1934, Howard was born in Pulaskiville, the only son of the late Gerald and Julia (Jagger) Taylor. He graduated from Edison High School in the Class of 1953, and later earned a degree from a business school in Columbus.
Following graduation, Howard started working as a timekeeper at Eaton Axel in Marion and doing carpentry work for several construction companies, until in 1963 when he founded Edison Billiard and Manufacturing. Soon thereafter, in 1964, Howard also took on a Yamaha franchise. His shop quickly became his true passion and enjoyment in life, and his customers were like family to him. Anyone who knew him, also knew that he “never stopped trying to make a buck” and probably “could sell a dress to the woman wearing it”.
With a love for traveling, every August Howard would close his shop for two weeks and travel somewhere he had never been before. He “traveled the world”, visiting all 50 states and most of the continents with his beloved family.
Many years ago, when Howard got his first Polaroid camera, he was instantly addicted to taking photos. He rarely went anywhere without his camera, taking thousands of photos along the way.
Saying Howard was a great story teller would be quite the understatement, as he had a way of making a story come to life and make you feel like you had been there. He also had “the best sense of humor!”
Having a heart of gold, whenever a friend of Howard was in need, he would be there for them and give them something that would truly help them.
He will be dearly missed by his son, Jeff (Judy) Taylor, of Edison; three grandchildren: Scott (Christina) Taylor of Edison, Mindy Taylor of Johnstown, and Allison Taylor of Pensacola, Florida; one great-grandson, Joshua Taylor; three step-grandchildren: Jordan (Tessa) Burns of Caledonia, Holly (Toby) Baldwin of Mount Gilead, and Ashley Burns of LaRue; five step great-grandchildren; and his former wife, Shirley McAlister of Ostrander.
The Taylor family will greet friends from 4 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services celebrating his life will also be held there on Friday at 10:30 a.m., with Celebrant Don Lockwood officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville.
