Russell John Smith, 90 years old, of Marion, passed away January 22, 2013, in the loving care of the Kingston Residence of Marion, and hospice.
Russell was born to Delbert and Artie (Kincaid) Smith on July 1, 1922 and was the oldest of 5 brothers and 3 sisters.
He was married for 66 years to the late Mary Margaret (Townsend) Smith before her passing in 2008. Russell and Mary had 3 children, David (JoAnn) of Caledonia, OH, Wayne (Joyce Collins) of Pennsylvania, and Janice (Dennis) Kelleher of Canal Fulton, OH. They have 8 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Russell graduated from Marion Harding High School in 1940. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942, serving in WWII. He served on the USS Jason Repair Ship, working on aircraft carriers, battleships, and cruisers.
He was employed by the Erie Lackawanna/ConRail Railroad for over 40 years.
While living on Nye St., he was a well-known sign painter for several years. He was also a talented painter, crafter, and in his younger years a Golden Glove Boxer.
Calling hours for Russell will be held from 4 to 7PM Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors. The Marion County United Veterans Council will hold Military Honors at 10:30 AM Friday, January 25, 2013 at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors followed by funeral services with Pastor Floyd Radebaugh officiating, burial will follow at the Caledonia Cemetery.
