Mary M. Mehaffey, 96, of Marion

Mary M. Mehaffey, age 96, a lifelong resident of Marion County, went to be with the Lord Friday evening, February 1, 2013, at the Marion Manor Nursing Home following an extended illness.

On May 25, 1916, Mary was born in Pleasant Township of Marion County, the daughter of the late John and Stella (Almendinger) Mehaffey.

She graduated from Pleasant High School in the Class of 1934, where she played on the high school basketball team.  She also enjoyed attending their reunions whenever she was able to attend.

For many years, Mary worked as a machine operator at Boise Cascade Company.

A woman of faith, Mary was an active member of the Prospect Street United Methodist, where she was involved in several committees and circles within the church.  She also was a member of the Pleasant Homemakers and a former member of the Bethlehem Grange.

An avid bowler, Mary went bowling as often as she could throughout her life.  She also was a very competitive euchre player.

Most important of all to Mary was her family, all of whom she would do anything for.  They all knew they could count on “Aunt Mary”, as she made her rounds to see all of her family every Sunday often bringing them cookies.  She also loved going on family camping trips with them, and attending their family reunions.

Very independent, despite her feisty exterior, Aunt Mary was a “softy” at heart.  She truly cared and loved her family and church family deeply.

She will be missed by her nieces: Marilyn (Mark) Beaver, and Evalyn (Don) Seiter; a nephew, Gary Mercer, all three of Marion; a niece-in-law, Jan Mehaffey of Loudenville; many great and great-great nieces and nephews, and church friends.

Her family will greet friends from 6 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion.  Services honoring her life will follow at 7:00 p.m., with Pastor Nancy Goulet officiating.  Graveside services will be observed on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Marion Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Prospect Street United Methodist Church, 185 S. Prospect St., Marion, OH 43302.

Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home is honored to have been chosen to serve Mary’s family and your private condolences may be expressed to them by visiting www.snyderfuneralhomes.com.
