David W. Harruff, age 87, of Cardington, passed away Friday morning, April 5, 2013, at his home.
On September 21, 1925, David was born in Agosta (Marion County), Ohio, the son of the late James W. and Cora (Kreisel McIntire) Harruff. He graduated from Agosta High School in the Class of 1943, and attended Allegheny College in Pennsylvania.
David joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and trained as a Bombardier/Navigator during World War II, graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant. He also spent 10 years in the Reserves.
While stationed in Texas during gunnery school, David met Maxine McCormick; they married in June of 1947 in Harlingen, Texas. Maxine shared almost 66 wonderful years of marriage with her handsome man.
A hard working man, David was a machinist at Hercules (later Peabody’s) in Galion for 38 years. He was also a lifelong farmer, raising many different types of produce and livestock over the years. He loved the peacefulness of being outdoors and watching his crops grow. He always looked forward to harvest season and all of the beautiful colors of autumn.
A man of faith, David attended Chesterville United Methodist Church, and observed God’s work through the wonders of nature, oftentimes taking long walks in the woods.
David will be dearly missed by his wife, Maxine, of Cardington; three daughters: Elaine (Bob) Govenar of Beavercreek, OH, Deborah Boccio of Las Vegas, NV, Rebecca Thomas of Wise, VA; five grandchildren: Stephen and Amanda Govenar, Nica Boccio, David and Ian Thomas; a great granddaughter, Abigail Thomas; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight half brothers and sisters.
The Harruff family will greet friends from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 8, 2013 at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services honoring his life will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m with Rev. Joe Sopher officiating. Burial will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
